Psalm 106

Spiritual Health Check Up

I am a big proponent of looking back over the events of our lives and giving God thanks for what He has done.  Next to my Bible I like to keep a journal where I keep a record of God’s blessings.  I find it comes in handy when things are not going well or I am having a bad day.

This psalm reminds me that when things are not going well, or I am having a bad day, it might be because of something I am doing or something I have done, rather than something that has happened to me.

This psalm begins with praise and thanksgiving to God for what He has done but the tone changes in verse 6 where the psalmist says, “We have sinned like our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly.” NASB

Following this verse the psalmist recounts the sins of his fathers as they wandered in the wilderness to the Promised Land. Sadly, the vast majority of those set free from slavery in Egypt never made it to the Promised Land.

In 2 Corinthians 13:5 the Apostle Paul writes, “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you-unless indeed you fail the test?” NASB

I am grateful for all the blessings God has bestowed on me, but may I never forget the price Jesus paid so I may be blessed with His mercy and grace.  I need to remember that it was my sin and the sin nature of mankind that sent Him to the cross.  Hebrews 12 says Jesus went to the cross for the joy set before Him.  I can’t begin to imagine that kind of joy let alone the love that would compel Him to take on the wrath due me for my sin, but He did, and for that I am forever grateful.

May it be that when I look at my journal of God’s blessings, that my praise and thanksgiving to God is for His love, grace, mercy and peace, and I recognize His love is at the core of every blessing I have received including salvation and eternal life. When I look at it this way I cannot help but join with the psalmist and say, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, From everlasting to everlasting. And let all the people say, ‘Amen.” Praise the Lord!” Psalm 106:48 NASB

Grace, Mercy, Love and Peace to you!
