Proverbs 5:7&8 Now then, my sons, listen to me And do not depart from the words of my mouth. Keep your way from her And do not go near the door of her house, NASB

In Chapter 4 wisdom was personified as a woman to be sought after. In Chapter 5 we are introduced to the adulteress or, in our footnote, the strange woman. The adulteress and her “wisdom” or temptation is a stumbling block intended to cause us pain and ruin. A good example of this is found in Matthew 16:21-23. The Greek word translated stumbling block in verse 23 is “skandalon” which is where we get our word “scandal.” The original meaning of “skandalon” was the place on the trap where the bait is attached.

If we are not careful even the word “Adulteress” can become a stumbling block for us if we do not understand the spiritual meaning here but only the physical meaning.

When one becomes a Christian they make a covenant with God like a marriage covenant. Ephesians 5:23-33.If a Christian follows a different source of wisdom other than God’s wisdom is to commit spiritual adultery.
