Numbers 16
Don’t Be Swept Up
Then Moses arose and went to Dathan and Abiram, with the elders of Israel following him, and he spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart now from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, lest you be swept away in all their sin.” Numbers 16:25&26 NASB
The Levites were in charge of the care and transport of the tabernacle. One of the Levites, Korah, decided to rebel against Moses and Aaron and joined forces with Dathan and Abiram along with two hundred and fifty others in their rebellion. Dathan and Abiram were not Levites. They were from the tribe of Reuben, evidence that the rebellion was spreading among the people.
In verse 21 God had told Moses and Aaron to separate themselves from the congregation He was about to judge but Moses and Aaron interceded for the congregation. In reply, God gave Moses and Aaron the instruction recorded in verses 25&26. Judgment was coming and what happened to the congregation would depend on whether or not the people listened to the word of God given to Moses and Aaron.
Our walk with the Lord is just that, a daily walk. It is not a one-time event or something we turn on and off. Jesus told us that the people in the days of Noah were going through their day to day life with no regard for God when it started to rain and the earth was flooded. Judgment came upon them suddenly. Jesus said that right before the judgment came people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, just as they had always done, just as everyone else was doing. Their end came upon them suddenly.
Following the crowd can be dangerous. Paul warns us in 1Corinthians 15:13, “Do not be deceived; Bad company corrupts good morals.” NASB
We may think that we can get away with what we are doing but if we will take a serious look at the news and the people around us we will see that the world is full of people who thought they were getting away with what they were doing and then all of a sudden their sin was exposed and they were ruined.
Instead of investing our time in the things of the world that bring ruin, we would be wise to invest our time in our relationship with the Lord and let Him lead us. He will never corrupt us or lead us to ruin.
Follow Jesus
