Proverbs 27:21

The crucible is for silver and the furnace for gold, And each is tested by the praise accorded him. NASB

In our study of Proverbs it is easy to focus on the different paths in life, the temptations we face, trials, and difficulties. To identify these and deal wisely with them makes us stronger and builds character.

This verse warns us of a temptation that we may not consider, praise and affirmation. Don’t get me wrong, not all praise and affirmation is bad. In fact much of it is good for us and may be well deserved. But there are those who want to break down our defenses and befriend us in order to take advantage of us. We are especially vulnerable when our soul is famished, verse 7 tells us. Verse 6 warns us that the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

How well do we know ourselves? What do we do when we are bored or emotionally hungry? Verse 8 warns us not to wander from our home but the word means literally “place.” Verse 20 says the eyes of man are never satisfied.

God will allow us to be tested from time to time to show us places of weakness that we need to be aware of.
