Proverbs 10:1
The Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his Mother.
Apparently Solomon’s son has reached an age where he will be responsible for the decisions he makes.
Solomon has attempted to guide his son into choosing wisdom. In the first 6 chapters, Solomon prepares his son by laying the foundation for godly character. The foundation, which is the fear of the Lord, must properly be in place before the construction begins.
Chapters 7-9 identify the source and the quality of the materials Solomon’s son can choose from. They fall into two categories. Good or evil. However, it is not as simple as that. Solomon knows his son will be in an environment where evil will make a deceptive appeal promising things that appeal to the sin nature of mankind yet are of inferior and even harmful quality.
In the chapters to come there will be many crossroads his son will face. At each of these crossroads, there will be decisions to be made that will test the quality of the foundation that has been laid and his sin’s craftsmanship.
