Proverbs 18:1

Through desire a man, having separated himself seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom. KJV

The word separated means break off. Intermeddleth means meddle with. In other words the man in this verse has chosen to separate himself from God’s wisdom and explore and embrace the wisdom of the world or culture. The NASB says this man quarrels against all sound wisdom.

The verses that follow in Chapter 18 describe some of the types of wisdom that are found in the world and the types of people who embrace worldly wisdom.

We need to keep this definition in mind when we read the remaining verses in this chapter or we may be led astray, as could be the case with verse 16, if we do not remember that this is the way the world thinks but is not God’s wisdom.

Believers are to be the salt of the earth. Matthew 5:13. Salt that has become tasteless is translated foolish in Romans 1:22 and 1 Corinthians 1:22.

Here is some salt sprinkled among all the foolishness. Verse 10, 12, 15, 22, and 24.
